Stout is a bold statement in contemporary Englishness. The chair’s beautifully-honed contours are unmistakably 21st century, but Stout’s principal features recall elements in the timeless iconography of English life. From the Spitfire wing backrest to its almost beer barrel rear vertical profile, even Stout's legs take on a decidedly pill-like form—suggesting perhaps a paracetemol after one too many in the village boozer the night before.
The Stout chair showcases the best of traditional woodcraft, with an 'adzed' seat and joints which are all either dowel capped or split tenon. For a lighter look, Stout is available in natural ash, the preferred timber of traditional Windsor chairmaking. Elm and ash, also both English, provide what we call the 'beer and foam' combination and for those who like their beer a little flatter, there is solid elm or ‘bitter’. Braver drinkers/sitters might be tempted by black ash or 'true stout'.
Our pieces are hand finished in a semi-matt hard wax oil, which is both durable and environmentally sound. And all Goodfield furniture is proudly made in England.
